Azle Texas History:
In 1846, Dr. James Azle Steward settled in the Azle area. The O’Bar post office opened in 1881. Dr. Azle donated land for the townsite in exchange for naming rights. The town’s economy was based on dairy farming and agricultural products, including corn, cotton, wheat, sorghum, watermelon, peanut and fruit. By 1920, Azle had 150 residents. The building of SH 199 in 1933 and the 1932 impoundment of Eagle Mountain Lake contributed greatly to the town’s growth.
