Martin Dies Jr. State Park Information:
Formerly called Dam B State Park, this 705 acre park is located on the edge of the Big Thicket between Woodville and Jasper on the 15,000 acre B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir. The park is located adjacent to the Angelina-Neches-Dam B WMA. TPWD acquired the land in 1964 under a 50 year lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The park opened to the public in 1965. The park habitat includes a swamp, numerous creeks (sloughs), the reservoir, and the Neches River. There are several paddling trails in and around the park. Park units include the Walnut Ridge Unit, the Hen House Ridge Unit, and the Cherokee Day Use Unit. The lake is located 15 miles southwest of Jasper, Texas. Park entrance and camping fees apply. Turn on Park Road 48, and drive to the park entrance.
 
Lake B.A. Steinhagen Information:
This 10,687 surface acre lake is located in the Kirby State Forest in the Texas Pineywoods Region of East Texas. The lake was formerly known as Dam B. It was created by impounding the Neches River at a point located midway between Jasper and Woodville, Texas. The Town Bluff Dam was completed in 1989. The upper reaches of Steinhagen Lake are approximately 20 miles down the Angelina River from the Sam Rayburn Dam. The Angelina River empties into the Neches River 12 miles north of Jasper, Texas. There are no marinas or equestrian trails on the lake. Designated biking and hiking trails are located at Martin Dies Jr. State Park. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake headquarters is located at Bluff View Park. From Jasper drive 15 miles west on U.S. 90, then 5 miles south on FM 92.

Neches River: 
The Neches River rises just east of Colfax in eastern Van Zandt County; it flows southeast for 416 miles to its mouth in Sabine Lake on the northern edge of Port Arthur, Texas. Except for a few miles near its head, the Neches serves as a boundary system for its entire length, forming the county lines between a several Texas counties. Reservoirs on the river include Lake Palestine, Lake B.A. Steinhagen near Town Bluff, and the small Rhine Lake located north of Palestine. Major tributaries include the Angelina River, which drains one-third of the basin area, Bayou La Nana, Ayish Bayou, Pine Island Bayou, Village Creek, Kickapoo Creek, and Flat Creek. Towns located along the river include Tyler, Beaumont, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Groves, Port Neches and Nederland.  Fish Stocking History
 
Angelina-Neches/Dam B Wildlife Management AreaInformation:
This 12,636 acre Wildlife Management Area is located in the Kirby State Forest at the fork of the Angelina and Neches Rivers, and on the B.A. Steinhagen Reservoir, approximately 12 miles north of Jasper, Texas. The WMA is located adjacent to the Martin Dies Jr. State Park. Approximately 7,000 acres of the WMA is reservoir. Habitat includes hardwood bottomland (mature water oak, cypress, sweet gum, and red oak trees), river floodplains, and upland sites which feature loblolly and shortleaf pine. The dam was originally built to support rice farming, but now is important for flood control of the surrounding areas. Hunting, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing are favored activities. Bring your own drinking water and insect repellant. Bicyclists are permitted to use the hiking trail. Touring bikes are recommended. Brochures are available at trailhead kiosks. There are no restroom facilities. Permits are not needed for fishing. Prominent fish species include crappie, gaspergoos, and blue, flathead and channel catfish. The WMA is not ADA compliant. Take U.S. 59 North to Livingston. Go east on U.S. 190 for 50 miles to the entrance to Martin Dies Jr. State Park.
