Anthony Texas History:
Anthony was named after the St. Anthony of Padua chapel which was built prior to 1884. The Texas settlement later became known as La Tuna, after the Federal Correctional Institution was located there. A post office operated from 1932 to 1965; it was reinstated in 1981. In the early 1940s, the population was estimated at only twenty. After Anthony incorporated in the 1950s, the population grew to 1,200 by the 1960s. In 1988, the Anthony Chamber of Commerce named the town the Leap Year Capital of the World. The Worldwide Leap Year Birthday Club, open to anyone born on February 29, had more than 100 members by 1992. Anthony is located on the Rio Grande River and the Texas-New Mexico border across from Anthony, New Mexico at the intersections of IH-10/U.S.85/U.S.185 and SH 20, 52 miles northwest of Fabens, 43 miles northwest of San Elizario, 37.8 miles northwest of Socorro, and 21 miles northwest of downtown El Paso, Texas.
