Anthony, Texas
Anthony Texas History:
Anthony was named after the St. Anthony of Padua chapel which was built prior to 1884. The Texas settlement later became known as La Tuna, after the Federal Correctional Institution was located there. A post office operated from 1932 to 1965; it was reinstated in 1981. In the early 1940s, the population was estimated at only twenty. After Anthony incorporated in the 1950s, the population grew to 1,200 by the 1960s. In 1988, the Anthony Chamber of Commerce named the town the Leap Year Capital of the World. The Worldwide Leap Year Birthday Club, open to anyone born on February 29, had more than 100 members by 1992. Anthony is located on the Rio Grande River and the Texas-New Mexico border across from Anthony, New Mexico at the intersections of IH-10/U.S.85/U.S.185 and SH 20, 52 miles northwest of Fabens, 43 miles northwest of San Elizario, 37.8 miles northwest of Socorro, and 21 miles northwest of downtown El Paso, Texas.

The twelve Texas Travel Centers are managed by the Texas Transportation Department (TXDot). All are staffed by professional travel counselors who help travelers with routings and provide information on points of interest, events, and road conditions. Open daily, 8am-5pm; 8am-6pm, Memorial Day through Labor Day; closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Easter, New Year’s Day, and Thanksgiving. Travelers can also call the toll free line, (800) 452-9292. Road conditions are available 24 hours a day on the toll free line, and travel information is available 8am-6pm. Take IH-10 West to Artcraft. Go left at the light and continue for three miles to Westside Dr. Go right onto Westside Dr. for three miles. At the second stop sign, go left. Take the immediate curve right onto SH 28. Zin Valle Vineyards is on the left in 3/4 mile.
