Cedar Hill Texas State Park
Cedar Hill State Park and Penn Farm Information:
In 1854, John Anderson Penn established the Penn Farm in the Cedar Mountains of southwest Dallas County. Today remnants of this farm survive intact within Cedar Hill State Park. The 1,826 acre state park is an urban nature preserve located on the 7,500 acre Joe Pool Reservoir. The reservoir features over 100 miles of shoreline. Park habitat consists of 5 native tallgrass prairie remnants (federally listed as endangered). Three of the remnants are dominated by Indian Grass, Little Bluestem, Big Bluestem, Side oaks Gama, Switch Grass, and other native grasses. Golden Cheeked Warblers have been seen in the park since 2004. The park is dominated by upland forests which include cedar elm, honey locust, mesquite, and juniper trees. Wildlife includes bobcat, coyote, fox, squirrel, armadillo, and raccoon. Park entrance and camping fees apply.The park is located on the flyway for Neotropical birds. Joe Pool Lake Information:
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Trinity River Authority and the TPWD collaborated to plan and construct the Joe Pool Reservoir on Mountain Creek. It was impounded in 1986. The lake has 6,469 surface acres, over 100 miles of shoreline, and a maximum depth of 75 feet. It is mostly fed by Mountain and Walnut Creeks. It drains north into Mountain Creek which feeds Mountain Creek Lake. The lake is one of the few lakes in Texas that drains north. Lake facilities include several parks, marinas and public boat ramps. Cedar Hill State Park is located lakeside. The northeastern corner of the lake is located in Dallas, and the remainder of the lake lies in Grand Prairie, Texas. The lake is located in southern Grand Prairie, 2 miles south of IH-20 (Great Southwest Parkway Exit).

Penn Farm Agricultural History Center:
The farm features reconstructed and historic buildings from the mid-1800s through the mid-1900s, demonstration gardens, and farm animals. Additional amenities include lifestyle artifacts and farm equipment from the late1800s, a water tower, a well, windmill, an old house, a cottage, old sheds and barns, and old wooden and barbed wire fencing. Cedar Hill State Park Directions:
From Dallas:Take IH-20 West to FM 1382. Exit south on FM 1382; drive 4.5 miles to the park.
From Waco:Take IH035 West to Fort Worth. Exit on Highway 67 North at Alvarado, Texas and drive 25 miles to Cedar Hill. Take FM 1382 west and drive 2 miles.
