City of Buchanan Dam Texas History:
The townsite was originally a construction camp established for the 1931 failed dam construction project. This dam project was originally known as Bluffton Dam for the nearby town of Bluffton. This future dam was renamed Hamilton Dam. The Emery-Peck and Rockwood Development Company, the company building the dam, established a post office, a settlement of several hundred workers, support services, and recreational facilities. Bankruptcy forced the closing of the project in 1932. Congressman James Paul Buchanan secured federal funding for the project in 1934. The dam, post office and town were named in his honor. Buchanan Dam was dedicated in October, 1937. After the dam was completed and the lake impounded, the town of Buchanan Dam grew steadily. The City of Buchanan Dam is located on the west side of the Lake Buchanan Dam at the intersections of CR 261 (Lakeshore Drive), FM 1431 and SH 29, 16.5 miles east of Llano, 14 miles southeast of Tow, 23.6 miles west of Bertram, 13 miles west of Burnet, 68 miles northwest of Austin, 33.5 miles northwest of Liberty Hill, 28 miles northwest of Marble Falls, 24.5 miles northwest of Horseshoe Bay, 16 miles northwest of Granite Shoals, and 7.9 miles north of Kingsland, Texas.
