Universal City Texas History:
When Randolph Air Force Base opened in 1931, the first business to open outside the gate was a service station. Pat Booker Road (SH 218), which is the main street and the entrance to Randolph AFB, was built in 1936. Beaty’s, the first restaurant, opened in 1939. The population grew slowly for the first 30 years. In 1950 Johnny Chuoke, the owner of Acme Lumber Company, began the first profitable development of Universal City when he began building homes in the Rosegarden. The first bank was established in 1963. The Universal City post office was established in 1971. Ninety Percent of Universal City residents are active and retired military.
