Rockwall Texas History:
The first Anglo-American settlers were the Boydstun family who settled on the East Fork of the Trinity River in the late1840s. A Baptist church was established in 1852. In 1854, Elijah Elgin donated the forty acre townsite located on a hill overlooking the river. The Rockwall post office opened that same year. The town was located in Kaufman County and served as a commercial center for area farmers. In 1873, Rockwall became the county seat of the newly formed Rockwall County. Rockwall incorporated in 1874. Residents from the nearby communities of Blackland and Heath began moving to Rockwall causing the population to swell to almost 1,000 residents by 1890. In 1886, the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railway completed a line through town, enabling the town to become a shipping center for area cotton, wheat and corn farmers. Other than during the Great Depression, the town’s population increased steadily over the years. The 1968 impoundment of Lake Ray Hubbard and the town’s proximity to Dallas has continued to influence the town’s growth.
