McClellan Creek National Grasslands & Lake McClellan Recreation Area Information:
The McClellan Creek National Grasslands are administered for the United States Department of Agriculture by the Cibola National Forest’s Black Kettle Ranger District. Oil and gas wells and cattle grazing are found on the grasslands. The 339.2 surface acre McClellan Reservoir is located entirely within the boundaries of the park. While the entire area burned in a February 2006 Fire, the lake is still open for recreation. The lake is located on McClellan Creek, a tributary of the North Fork of the Red River. It was impounded in 1938. It was renovated and dredged in 1995. The average lake depth is 21 feet. Recreational sites with amenities are located within the grasslands. The sites are popular with weekend ATV riders. These campgrounds are open year round; fees apply. The Grasslands and Lake McClellan are located 7 miles west of McLean, 59 miles east of Amarillo, and northeast of Groom, Texas.From Alanreed, take IH-40 west to FM 2477 at exit 128. Lake McClellan Recreation Area Amenities:
An unnamed ATV use area located 2.3 miles from IH-40 features walk in campsites on the banks of the 300 surface acre Lake McClellan. There are no amenities and the sites are sunny with poor privacy. A second unnamed ATV use area is located 3.1 miles from IH-40 and has 23 campsites. Several of these sites have electric and water hookups. Sites 9-18 have shade provided by cottonwood trees. All other sites are side-by-side parking lot style sites with little or no shade. All 23 campsites have picnic tables and BBQ grills. Additional amenities include boat ramps, trails, a water faucet, and ADA compliant vault toilets and showers. Activities include no wake boating, ATV use, camping and picnicking. Fish species include channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and saugeye. From Alanreed, Texas take IH-40 west 6.5 miles to FM 2477 at Exit 128. Bear right at the exit sign and drive to the stop sign. Turn right onto FM 2477 (a narrow two lane paved road) and drive 2.3 miles to the campground’s walk-in tent section. To get to the RV and tent camping area, drive 3.1 miles to the campground sign. Go left at the sign and drive 0.1 miles to the “Y” intersection. Bear right at the “Y” and drive 0.3 miles to the campground. Lake McClellan National Recreation Area North Boat Ramp:
Amenities include a one lane boat ramp with parking for 5 vehicles, picnic areas and camping. Open year round; a boat ramp fee applies. (806) 779-2092. From Alanreed, take IH-40 west to FM 2477 at exit 128. Go right (north) on FM 2477 and drive to the boat ramp located past the dam on the south side of the road.
 
Lake McClellan National Recreation Area South Boat Ramp:
Amenities include a one lane boat ramp with parking for 5 vehicles, picnic areas and camping. Open year round; a boat ramp fee applies. (806) 779-2092. From Alanreed, take IH-40 west to FM 2477 at exit 128. Go right (north) on FM 2477. Go left on the lake road located just south of the dam and drive to the ramp.
