The 5,490 surface acre Lake Pat Mayse is located on Sanders Creek, a tributary of the Red River. The lake was impounded in 1967. It has a maximum depth of 55 feet. Several parks offer camping, picnicking, swimming, boating, fishing, and hunting. Predominant fish species include largemouth bass, white crappie, sunfish, striped bass, channel and flathead catfish. The lake lands are managed for upland game and white tail deer, and are open for public hunting. Fur bearers such as opossum, beaver, mink, skunk, and nutria are also present. The lake area also is a resting and feeding habitat for migratory waterfowl. A few miles north of the project area are the famed Red River Bottoms where waterfowl congregate in great numbers. The lake area was a military artillery range in the 1940s; please do not touch the remaining ordnance. For more complete lake information, go to the Pat Mayse Lake Home Page. The dam is located approximately 1 mile south of the town of Chicota, four miles northwest of Powderly and 12 miles north of Paris, Texas. From Paris, go 15 miles north on U.S. 171. Hunt Texas Online Connection:
More than 95% of Texas land is privately owned, making it hard for hunters to find affordable hunting opportunities. The Texas Parks and Wildlife has a huge public hunting program, and has developed a new service to help hunters find hunting places. This new service is provided free by the TPWD. It allows landowners to list available hunting leases or spots that have opened up, and allows hunters to find private hunting leases according to their preferences.
