Government Canyon State Natural Area
Government Canyon State Natural Area Information:
The 8,624 acre state natural area was purchased by TPWD in 1993 with the cooperation of other groups. It opened to the public in October, 2005. During the spring of 2013, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department purchased an additional 461 acres, bringing the total SNA acreage to 9,082. The new acreage contains the second highest peak in Bexar County. The highest peak is the 1,500 foot tall Black Hill located between Government Canyon SNA and San Antonio Ranch. The SNA is located on the former Joe Johnson Road, an1850s military road connecting San Antonio to Bandera, Texas. It is divided into three areas, the Front Country, the Back Country, and the Protected Habitat Area. Amenities include primitive campsites and over 40 miles of trails. Activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding, primitive camping, birding and nature study. Birds sighted include the golden-cheeked warbler, black-capped vireo, common raven, canyon wren, canyon towhee, Scott’s oriole, black-throated sparrow, wild turkey, roadrunner and others. Government Canyon State Natural Area Directions:   
From the intersection of Loop 1604 and Culebra Road (FM 471- the back road to Castroville), go west 3.5 miles to Galm Road. Turn right (north) on Galm Road and drive 1.6 miles to the gate (with signs) on the left.
