Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge Information:
This National Wildlife Refuge consists of the Flying X Ranch and the Doeskin Ranch. The Flying X ranch is used as an event center, but not as a public use area. Recreational opportunities are available on the Doeskin Ranch. The primary purpose of the refuge is to conserve the nesting habitat of the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and Black-capped Vireo which are dependent on the refuge’s habitat of oaks, elm and Ashe juniper (cedar). The refuge is also home to migrant songbirds and Neotropical migrants. Hunting is available for youth and adult hunters. The refuge offers many special nature events including guided walks, classes in building birdhouse nest boxes, and butterfly and other nature programs. Restrooms and free literature are available in the headquarters building. Bring plenty of drinking water. The refuge is open daily, sunrise to sunset. Occasionally the refuge is closed because of resource management activities or safety concerns. The refuge needs volunteers to help build and maintain nature trails, install signs, maintain refuge roads, boundary fences, traffic signs and gates, present programs and guided nature walks, assist with planning special events, and for many other activities. A limited number of RV pads are available for non-local volunteers who own their own RVs, and who can work 3 days a week per person for a few weeks or months at a time throughout the year.
