Mount Vernon Texas History:
The first area settler was Joshua Foster Johnson who arrived in 1845. A community developed around the Keith post office which was established in 1848. In 1850, the town was renamed Lone Star. By the early 1860s was referred to as Mount Vernon which it was officially renamed in 1875. By 1870, the town had several stores, at least two mills, a school, three churches, and 223 residents. In 1875 Mount Vernon was elected Franklin County Seat, easily beating out the towns of Mile Post 14 and Mile Post 15.
In 1887, the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway built a line across the county through Mount Vernon, spurring the town’s growth. The town became a major shipping and supply center for area farmers and the lumbering interests. The town incorporated in 1910. An industrial park was established by the Franklin County Industrial Foundation, and by 1970, Mount Vernon had added manufacturing industries to its economic base. Mount Vernon is located at the intersections of IH-30, of U.S. 67 (Main Street) and SH 37 (Kaufman Street), 42 miles southeast of Cooper and Jim Chapman Lake, 44.4 miles southeast of Paris and Pat Mayse Lake, approximately 16 miles south of the Sulphur River, 36 miles southwest of Clarksville, 16 miles northwest of Mount Vernon, 55 miles northwest of Linden, 33 miles northwest of Daingerfield, 45 miles northwest of Gilmer, 26 miles northwest of Pittsburg, 19 miles northwest of Lake Bob Sandlin, 10 miles north of Lake Cypress Springs, 42.6 miles northeast of Mineola, 33 miles northeast of Quitman, 17.2 miles northeast of Winnsboro, 37 miles northeast of Yantis and Lake Fork, approximately 60 miles northeast of Lake Tawakoni, and 23.3 miles northeast of Sulphur Springs, Texas. 
 
Franklin County Courthouse, 1912:
