Joaquin Texas History:
Joaquin was established in 1885 when Benjamin Franklin Morris donated 100 acres to the Houston, East and West Texas Railway on the condition that a railroad station was constructed on the land. Morris named the town that grew up around the station after his grandson Joaquin. A post office was established in 1886. The town became a shipping point for lumber and cotton. A sawmill was built in 1914. Joaquin incorporated in 1940 when it had 487 residents. Joaquin is located across the Sabine River from Logansport, Louisiana. The recreational opportunities afforded by its position at the north end of the Toledo Bend Reservoir and the Sabine National Forest helped the town’s economy recover from the decline in area agriculture. Joaquin is located at the intersections of U.S. 84, SH 7, FM 2428 and FM 3174, 49 miles northeast of Nacogdoches, 21 miles northeast of Timpson, 15 miles northeast of Center, 11.6 miles northeast of Tenaha, 59 miles southeast of Marshall, 55 miles southeast of Henderson, 44.7 miles southeast of Tatum, 28 miles southeast of Carthage, 57 miles northwest of Hemphill, 49.6 miles northwest of Milam, 23 miles northwest of Shelbyville, 53 miles northeast of the Sam Rayburn Reservoir, the Angelina National Forest and Broaddus, and 35.4 miles northeast of San Augustine, Texas.
