Grapeland Texas History:
In the mid-1850s and 1860s, a home near present day Grapeland was a stop on the route between Crockett and Palestine, and was a mail drop for settlers. In 1872, the Houston and Great Northern Railroad Company completed a line through the area, and gave the New York and Texas Land Company 640 acres to develop as a townsite. When the post office was established in 1873, the settlement was named Grapeland after the wild fruit that grew in the area. The town quickly became a railroad and commercial center for area cotton farmers. By the early 1900s, Grapeland had five general stores, two cotton gins, several mills, a hotel, a newspaper, and over 400 residents. After a 1913 fire destroyed 15 businesses, the town quickly rebuilt in brick. Grapeland incorporated in 1924. Today Grapeland is primarily an agricultural area. Grapeland is located west of the Davey Crockett National Forest at the intersections of U.S. 287/SH 19, FM 227, FM 228, FM 2423 and FM 2968, 49 miles southeast of Fairfield and Fairfield Lake State Park, 58 miles southeast of Athens, 22.5 miles southeast of Palestine and the Texas State Railroad, 48 miles southwest of Jacksonville, 39 miles southwest of Rusk, 59 miles northwest of Lufkin, 33 miles northwest of Ratcliff, 29.6 miles northwest of Kennard, 48 miles north of Riverside, 13 miles north of Houston County Lake and Crockett, Texas.
