Flower Mound Texas History:
Settlers from the Peters colonyfirst moved to the area in 1844. They named their town for the prominent 50 foot tall, 12.5-acre mound covered with wildflowers; The Flower Mound is located in the southern portion of the town. The most widely accepted explanation for the mound is that during the early 1800s it was a sacred ceremonial ground of Wichita Indians. Today the mound is owned and managed by the Mound Foundation. In spite of lacking a railroad, the farming and cattle continued to grow. The completion of Lake Grapevine in the 1952 caused the town to grow. In 1961, Flower Mound incorporated to avoid annexation by the City of Irving.
