Celeste Texas History:
In 1886, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway platted the town of Celeste three miles north of Kingston at the railroad’s intersection with the Missouri, Kansas and Texas line. The Santa Fe bypassed Kingston because they refused to provide incentives to have the new rail line built through their town. The presence of two railroads insured Celeste’s rapid growth. Many residents and businesses from Kingston moved to Celeste to be closer to the railroad. The Celeste post office was established in 1886. By the mid-1890s the town had three gristmills and cotton gins, a bank, a weekly newspaper, a public school and 600 residents. Celeste incorporated in 1900. Celeste is located two miles southeast of the headwaters of the Sabine River at the intersection of U.S. 69 and FM 272, 62 miles northeast of Dallas, 43 miles northeast of Rockwall and Lake Ray Hubbard, 40 miles northeast of Wylie, 18.6 miles northeast of Farmersville and Lake Lavon, 37 miles northeast of McKinney, 37.6 miles southeast of Sherman, 23 miles south of Bonham and Bonham State Park, 33 miles southwest of Jim Chapman Lake, 41 miles southwest of Cooper, 44 miles northwest of Sulphur Springs, 42 miles northwest of Emory and Lake Fork, 25.8 miles northwest of Commerce, 23 miles northwest of Campbell, 13 miles northwest of Greenville, 30 miles northwest of Quinlan and Lake Tawakoni, and 19.9 miles north of Lake Tawakoni and Quinlan, Texas.
